“‭31‭ ‭Then‭ said‭‭ Jesus‭ to‭ those Jews‭ which‭ believed‭‭ on him‭, If‭ ye‭ continue‭‭ in‭ my‭ word‭, ‭then‭ are ye‭‭ my‭ disciples‭ indeed‭;‭ ‭32‭ ‭And‭ ye shall know‭‭ the truth‭, and‭ the truth‭ shall make‭‭ you‭ free‭‭.‭” - John 8:31-32

Core Beliefs

The following are some core beliefs of the church of God at Mount Vernon, Ohio... based on the foundational truths taught in the Bible. All of our teaching and ministry is rooted in and flows out of these basic biblical doctrines.

The Trinity

There is one eternally existing God who has three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God is the creator of all that exists, both visible and invisible, and is therefore worthy of all glory and praise.  God is perfect in love, power, holiness, goodness, knowledge, wisdom,  justice, and mercy. He is unchangeable and therefore is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Revelation

God has revealed himself to us through his son, Jesus Christ, who is the express image of the invisible God, through the holy scriptures, and through all of creation itself.

Mankind

Humans, both male and female, were created in God's image for His glory. The first humans, Adam and Eve, were created without sin and appointed as caretakers of the rest of God's creation.

The Fall

When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, their souls died. Since God is holy and cannot have fellowship with unrighteousness, their sins broke their relationship with Him. They lost fellowship with God and brought all mankind under the power of sin.

Salvation

Jesus Christ came to reconcile us with God. He lived a life without sin and willingly died on the cross to pay the penalty for our transgressions. God raised him from the dead and now, by grace, offers eternal life as a free gift to all who repent, confess and follow Christ, by faith, as their Lord and Savior.

Living Sanctified

What God has worked in us, we must work out with fear and trembling. The scriptures teach us to come out from among them and be separate. This is continually growing in grace, setting yourself fully apart for God, and removing anything from your life that would hinder fellowship with Him. We are to look holy and live holy lives, peculiar from the world.

The Church

The Church is the visible body of Christ, sent into the world to glorify God and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are automatically united with every born again believer through the Spirit and must maintain that unity the Spirit produces until we come to the unity of the faith.

The Holy Scriptures (KJV)

The holy scriptures were written down by holy men as the Holy Ghost inspired them.
We hold that the King James Version is the most accurate English translation of the Holy Scriptures.

Healing and Miracles

We see Jesus the same yesterday, today and forever. His power did not diminish nor pass away with the apostles. We also affirm that He has the right to remain God and chose what He wants, if our requests do not align with His will.

Tongues 'Languages'

In the Bible, the term ‘tongues’ means ‘languages.’ God gave this gift to provide an understanding of the gospel message to people of different languages. The intent of the gift is making God’s word understandable to the hearers. Through this, God gives gifts to edify the whole body, not exalt one or two people.

The Bible speaks of an unknown tongue, referring to speaking in a language that nobody but you understands. It is like speaking English to a group of native Spanish speakers — unless they are bilingual, they cannot understand what you are saying. So Paul says: if there is no interpreter present, the one speaking in an unknown language should keep silent in the church.

The Ordinances

We practice the ordinances of water baptism (immersion), the Lord's supper, and feet washing.

The Return of Jesus

Jesus Christ is returning on a cloud and we will be gathered up to meet Him and ever be with him in the new world wherein dwells righteousness.
